Mobiles head PC Expo

It's called PC Expo, but because the PC has become mobile, so has much of the show.

While traditional desktop computers featured in the New York show, laptops, handhelds and smart phones figured heavily in the mix of 500 exhibits.

"The past year has seen explosive growth in the remote-access arena, especially palm devices," said Randy Zane, a spokesman for PC Expo.

In a bid to manage such devices, IBM demonstrated a new version of Netfinity Director with a Java-based management console and server for tracking laptops, desktops and handhelds and deploying software updates on them. The client-based software will appear in products later this year, IBM officials said.

Also in the systems management area, Hewlett-Packard displayed the abilities of netDeploy 4, technology from Open Software Associates, that allows HP to preload all operating system and application software on new PCs.

The preloads will allow IT managers to automatically update applications easier and faster, HP officials said.
