Microsoft releases Visual Studio 6.0

Microsoft yesterday launched version 6.0 of its Visual Studio suite of development tools at its TechEd conference being held here.

Among the new features being hyped by Dave McNaughton, Microsoft's recently appointed developer products and MSDN program marketing manager, are improved integration among the tools, greater platform interoperability, and enhanced support for distributed application development, with new Web development tools and expanded data access capabilities.

The upgraded products are: Visual Basic 6.0, Visual C++ 6.0, Visual FoxPro 6.0, Visual InterDev 6.0, and Visual J++ 6.0. The family of tools are available separately or together as a suite.

"Visual Studio 6.0 is another step forward in our 'digital nervous system' vision because it enables developers to build distributed solutions that can easily integrate existing systems within the corporation," McNaughton said.

The estimated retail price (ERP) for Visual Studio 6.0 Professional Edition is $1799, while the Enterprise Edition is priced at $2699.

The tools can also be purchased separately; Visual Basic 6.0 and Visual C++ 6.0 are available in Standard, Professional and Enterprise Editions for $189, $909 and $2159 respectively.

Meanwhile, Visual FoxPro 6.0 and Visual InterDev 6.0 Professional Editions are priced at $909 each, and Visual J++ has an ERP of $189 for the Standard Edition and $909 for the Professional Edition.

The Visual SourceSafe version control system 6.0 is priced at $909.
