Unlikely players join Web- legacy integration fray

Outsourcing giant Electronic Data Systems (EDS) and Cisco have allied to develop services that give organisations the chance to preserve investments made in legacy systems.

The first service offering, EDS NetConnect, is designed to make mainframe-based data and applications accessible through desktop applications such as Web browsers.

Using EDS NetConnect, organisations can replace traditional technology used to access and transport mainframe-based data. The new technology combines traditional and Internet Protocol (IP) networks into a single network accessible by Web browsers, officials said.

The EDS and Cisco alliance hopes to tap some of the potential revenues from mainframe-to-legacy products, which IDC estimates will reach $US1 billion by 2000.
