Local carriers take broadband to Singapore

A three-way alliance which includes Australian telecommunications carriers Telstra and Davnet will market broadband services to corporate customers in Singapore, Davnet said in a statement last week.

The alliance was signed between Davnet and Harmony Telecommunications, a joint venture formed in April between Telstra and DataOne Asia. Both Davnet's Singapore subsidiary and Harmony were granted facilities-based operator (FBO) licences to offer telecommunications services in Singapore when the market was fully liberalised.

The alliance will offer building owners and business users in Singapore a suite of communications services including voice, data, video and multimedia, Davnet said.

The two sides will jointly market each other's products and services, which include broadband and facilities management services, Web hosting, application service provider (ASP) offerings, voice and data networks, and video streaming, Davnet said in the statement.

Davnet will contribute its experience in providing aggregated Internet, data, voice and video high-bandwidth communications over a single socket in each office of a commercial building. Under the alliance, a number of leading properties such as Suntec City, one of Singapore's largest commercial complexes, will be targeted. Davnet Singapore recently completed the cabling of five office towers in Suntec City, the company said.

Telstra and Davnet have been the most active of the five new operators granted FBO licenses by Singapore's Government. Telstra has stated it believes Singapore has potential as a domestic market and a regional communications hub.

The other three FBO licensees - WorldCom and local companies Flag Telecom Singapore and SP Telecommunications, are yet to announce major development plans for the Singapore market.
