UMD scores RFID distribution deal

Distributor claims SkyeTech modules open up new markets for plug-and-play style RFID applications

US RFID developer, SkyeTek, has appointed Unique Micro Design (UMD) as the first local distributor of its RFID modules.

SkyeTek develops HF and UHF RFID readers. The intelligent edge devices are designed to make it easy for OEM and systems integrators to deploy RFID-based fixed and mobile terminals.

UMD already distributes other RFID modules, but managing director, Geoffrey Ramadan, said SkyeTek's products were a chance to open up a new market. He claimed SkyeTek's RFID modules could be used for plug-and-play types of embedded and mobile applications, which would lower the cost of using the technology.

SkyeTek vice-president of marketing and strategy, Martin Payne, reported rising demand in the region for RFID, particularly for applications that require cost-efficient readers with higher value software functionality like encryption and anti-counterfeiting.

UMD will have access to all of SkyeTek's products. Ramadan said it would actively promote RFID development kits.

"It's a great way to open up the market from an educational perspective," he said.

Ramadan, who is also a founding member of the RFID Association of Australia, said UMD would supply the RFID products to other companies as well as build its own readers.

"It's a significant agency for us as we can add significant value and support through our engineering ICT solutions capability," he said. "This reflects our ability to design and modify electronic products and support through our professional software and support services."
