The Australian Bureau of Statistics has tallied up Internet activity in Australia, publishing the results of its first quarterly survey of Internet service providers (ISPs).
The survey showed there were 3.8 million Internet subscribers registered in Australia at the end of the September quarter, 2000. There are 718 ISPs supplying access, with the eight largest ISPs providing 2.3 million or 60 per cent of Internet subscribers.
Australia's 400,000 business and government subscribers account for 43 per cent of the total data downloaded. On average, the figures showed subscribers download an average of 273MB of data in three months, with business and government downloading around 10 times more data than household subscribers.
