Thieves broke into Acer's Hong Kong warehouse over the weekend, holding Acer employees hostage in a standoff with police before making off with $US1 million worth of computers and peripherals, the company said.
An undisclosed number of Acer employees were at the warehouse when the robbery took place at around noon on Saturday, the Taipei company said in a statement.
They were held hostage by the robbers, who are believed to have been armed with guns, but no-one was hurt and the robbers fled the scene with the stolen computers after a standoff with police, said Erica Hao, a company spokeswoman. Hong Kong police are investigating the robbery.
Acer's Hong Kong warehouse was closed on Monday due to a holiday but normal operations are expected to resume today, she said.
In the wake of the theft, Acer plans to boost security at the warehouse to protect its employees and operations. Customer deliveries are not expected to be affected and insurance will cover the financial impact of the robbery, the company said.
