Datacom: Steady improvement the name of the game

Green Project Datacom

For Datacom, though, the big development this time around is its work in greening up the datacentre. Last year, the improvements to the datacentre were kept secret, but this year Peel could give ARN some details.

“We’ve invested a significant amount of revenue in building a new datacentre in New Zealand. That datacentre is based on eco-friendly practices to improve its efficiency,” he said. “We’ve improved the equipment we have in place, and the design of the building so that it has a much more efficient cooling system, and uses the cool air in that location. The way we’ve constructed that location has been improved as well – this time we’ve used eco-friendly construction practices, so we’ve really thought a lot about that building.”

Datacom is also keen to work with other organisations and comply with environmental standards and legislation to maintain its growing green credentials.

“Something we’re looking at is how we engage with our partners and our clients, and how we assess which partners we work with. Part of the assessment will now be about their green credentials, and how they run their businesses, as we really look to work with partners that are aligned with the way we look to operate,” Peel said.

“We’ve also committed to the adoption of ISO 14001, so that will bring a lot further rigour to our datacentre space and the way we manage our infrastructure. And on the back of that, we’ll be making sure we devote appropriate training to all the relevant staff, so they understand what environmental management systems are and how you can effectively manage them.”

Datacom nominated itself for the award, outlining the progression the company had made in the green space and demonstrating why it deserved recognition.

“As a company we’ve been around for 45 years. Going forward, it really will be about the continuation of our strategy of being a premium provider of IT support services and associated services around company service, technical support and sales and marketing,” Peel said. “Services around collaborative engagements we have with our business, the customer satisfaction we can deliver to our clients, and the overall way that we deliver to our clients will continue to be our main focus.”
