HTC today announced the launch of its latest smartphone in Australia, the Touch HD.

Exclusive to Telstra's Next G network until April 30, and expected to be available through Telstra shops and dealers from 10 February, the Touch HD's key feature is a large 3.8in VGA display. This is one of the largest screens available on a mobile phone, surpassing the iPhone 3G's 3.5in display.

The phone also offers HTC's TouchFLO 3D interface, a standard 3.5mm headphone jack and a 5-megapixel camera with autofocus. HTC will also bundle an 8GB microSD card in the sales package.

"Touch HD delivers an uncompromising multimedia and Internet experience", said HTC's Anthony Petts. "The Internet is so much more than just e-mail and our customers expect to be able to access the Internet and high quality multimedia content when they are on the move."

The Touch HD is a HSDPA device that is theoretically capable of 7.2Mbps. Telstra is in the process of upgrading its network to support speeds of up to 21Mbps, but the Touch HD won't be able to take advantage of this.

The HTC Touch HD will be available outright for $1499. Telstra is also offering the handset for $0 upfront on a $150 member plan with a repayment option of $62.45 per month over 24 months.
