Intel pushes for virtualisation

The new Intel Xeon 5500 chipset provides support for virtualisation and cloud computing initiatives

Intel has launched the latest version of its chip technology, the Intel Xeon Processor, to target the blossoming virtualisation market.

Speaking at the launch in Sydney, Intel A/NZ enterprise solutions group manager, Corey Loehr, claimed the Xeon iteration was designed to integrate more tightly with virtualisation and cloud computing architectures than previous chipsets.

“By 2015, the architecture will be a lot different from what it is today,” he said. “Cloud architecture is becoming an increasing concern for a lot of enterprises and they are now are looking at their private cloud.

“Enterprises are looking at how to get the best possible return on investment into this system and further their cloud initiatives.”

Loehr claimed the Xeon 5500 series doubled the relative performance and halved the idle power consumption compared to the Xeon 5400. Vendors utilising the chipset are HP, IBM, Dell, ASI, Lenovo, Fujitsu and Acer.

Intel partner, ASI product manager, Craig Quinn, pointed to the range of price points and performance as an advantage for channel players.

“The difference between the different processors within the Xeon 5500 family gives the ability to optimise the right mix of processor and memory to achieve the desired result,” he said. “Depending on the needs of the end user, there is certainly an opportunity to let channel players deliver value to the customer.”

The Xeon 5500 series processors, including the L5518, L5508, E5540 and E5504, all feature Intel’s turbo boost and hyper-threading technology.
