Apple: Mac App Store hit 1 million download mark in 24 hours

Apple Friday said that more than 1 million apps were downloaded from the Mac App Store on its first day.

The store launched Thursday at noon EST with more than 1,000 free and paid apps,  and was available as part of Mac OS X 10.6.6 (a.k.a.,Snow Leopard) also released yesterday. The store leverages Apple’s iTunes app buying system that users are already so familiar with using for their iPhones and iPods, though requires a new app for access.

"We’re amazed at the incredible response the Mac App Store is getting," said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. "Developers have done a great job bringing apps to the store and users are loving how easy and fun the Mac App Store is."

Not surprising: Hackers are already boasting about finding their way into the Mac App Store as well.

Apple says that Mac developers set the price for their apps and keep 70 per cent of the sales revenue. They aren’t charged for posting free apps.

Apple itself has posted apps in the store, and at discounts off the boxed packages.

Apple watchers such as EverythingiCafe’s Tim Barribeau were impressed at the wicked pace at which Mac App Store apps were downloaded, though noted: "I bet most of those were Twitter and Angry Birds."

Apple loves notifying the world whenever it hits key million milestones, such as when it sold 3 million iPads in less than 3 months.
