Multiple impacts on retailers flow on from Japanese disaster

Canon outlines local hurt resulting from the earthquake and tsunami

The effects of Japanese earthquake disaster are beginning to be felt in the local market with Canon warning its retail partners of some likely supply shortfalls.

Analysts have already said that no other disaster has affected the local ICT markets after the March 11 quake and tsunami.

Canon has announced that the catastrophe will impact on its consumer products business in A/NZ.

It said retailers will feel a slight pinch because of damage to its operations and some of its suppliers.

They should prepare for a product scarcity across Canon’s camera portfolio – including cameras, lenses, videos and parts for camera repairs.

“We have advised our retail partners here in A/NZ of the impact on our business and are working closely with them to carefully manage supplies to ensure all our customers’ needs are met to the best of our ability,” Director of Australia’s Canon Consumer Imaging division, Jason McLean, said.

A comprehensive recovery plan covering development, production and sales operations had been devised to help its Japanese counterparts.

The shortfalls will hit the market from mid-April and are expected to last until mid-2011 or, possibly, into the third quarter of the year.

However, Canon said it was more hopeful about its consumer printing and consumable stocks, projecting only minor supply shortages in coming months.
