Intel ships next-generation Atom platform in May

Cedar Trail and Oak Trail promise improvements in media, graphics and power consumption

Chip giant, Intel, says the Atom platform, previously known as Oak Trail, will ship in devices from May.

Intel Atom Z670 processors come with the Intel SM35 Express Chipset, featuring a lead-free, halogen-free design with high-speed USB 2.0 and Intel high-definition audio for home theatre sound.

The Z670 allows applications to run on a variety of operating systems, including Google, Android, MeeGo and Windows.

It also boasts enhanced video playback, high-speed Internet browsing and extended battery life, without having to forgo performance.

More than 35 tablet and hybrid designs from companies including Evolve III, Fujitsu Limited, Lenovo, Motion Computing, Razer, and Viliv are based on Oak Trail and run a variety of operating systems.

Intel intends to raise the bar with its next-generation Cedar Trail which will include features such as wireless music, wireless display, PC sync and fast boot.

The Cedar Trail platform mobile and desktop designs can be expected sometime mid-2011.

“We are accelerating the Intel Atom product line to now move faster than Moore’s law, bringing new products to market on three process technologies in the next three years,” Intel vice-president and general manager of netbook and tablet group, Doug Davis, said in a statement.

Intel has a sneak peek of Cedar Trail at this week's Intel Developer Forum in Beijing.
