NBN will provide greater media convergence: Samsung

Television no longer some ‘idiot box’ but a technology player

Samsung claims to have transitioned from producing ‘just a TV’ to creating an entertainment hub - and it says the NBN will further allow it to expand technology and content.

At the KANZ Broadband Summit, Samsung Electronics group senior product manager – AV, Evan Manolis, said its recently launched Smart Hub IPTV takes TV viewing to the next level.

“When we talk about smart TV, we talk about the TV being able to be networked – via Web browsing, sharing photos and videos, videos on demand, catch up TV, sports and other social networks such as Twitter and Facebook,” he said.

Manolis said there were further opportunities to add more content to it.

With the expansion of other smart devices such as Android tablets, the iPhone, iPad and other platforms, Samsung intends to converge and work together with those platforms.

Manolis claimed that it’s not just about the convergence, but rather, about the peripherals that go along with it to make the user interface much easier.

Research conducted by Samsung showed consumers expect an easy user interface that provides the same experience as using a laptop – to search the Internet or use social networking sites.

The company has provided these capabilities with its Smart Hub TV range and intended to expand content and technology once the NBN, is set up and ready.

With quicker download rates and a better network response, consumers would be able to do more with this technology, Manolis said.

Consumers should prepare for a smart society and a cloud society, he said.

Having launched the available content and partnering with some of the biggest content providers in Australia, Samsung now aims to add value to consumer content.

Co-marketing strategies with Telstra are in view to not just bring content to viewers, but also make partnerships stronger.

“It also allows us to have another distribution channel, non-specific retailer or traditional retailer,” he said.
