Telco service provider, Telstra, has launched its Ultimate Mobile Wi-Fi – a battery-operated device that splits Next G mobile broadband connectivity with up to five devices simultaneously.

It features download speeds at 20Mbps, up to four times faster than currently achievable in ultimate coverage areas such as local capital city CBDs and associated airports, selected metropolitan hubs and more than 100 regional centres.

Telstra mobile products executive director, Warwick Bray, said a rise in laptop, tablet and smartphone ownership resulted in more Australians wanting fast mobile broadband connectivity.

“Australians are now taking a growing range of Wi-Fi enabled devices with them when they’re outside the home and office. However, managing separate mobile broadband accounts for each gadget can be a hassle,” he said.

Telstra aims to provide businesses with the flexibility to keep people productive on customer visits, to trade and community events, or to temporary work locations.

The Ultimate Mobile Wi-Fi device also sports a sleek black design, a large LED display providing instant information such as signal strength, number of devices connected and battery level and an audio alert that lets owners know when devices connect and disconnect from the Wi-Fi network.

According to Telstra, it is the first 3G hotspot in Australia to support Wi-Fi standard N connectivity for fast Wi-Fi throughput.

The Telstra Ultimate Mobile Wi-Fi is now available while the BigPond version will go on sale on July 19.

Business customers can purchase the device on a range of Telstra or BigPond Mobile Broadband plans.

The company also recently released a new Complete Home Bundles range and injected $800 million into cloud computing.
