AICD's Burrell appointed as IIA CEO

Former CEO, Peter Coroneos, departs end of June, Burrell starts in September

Steve Burrell will leave the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) and join the The Internet Industry Association (IIA), as its new CEO.

Burrell replaces former chief executive, Peter Coroneos, who is retiring after 13 years in the position.

Burrell will be responsible for developing policy in a range of vital areas for the industry and making sure that the industry has strong representation in Canberra and internationally on key policy issues.

IIA chair, Bruce Linn, said, “The association is at an inflection point in its 15\-year development where the complex issues of Internet policy have become centre stage in the Digital Economy and having someone fill the large shoes of Peter is critical to the associations’ continued development and the industry we serve.”

Burrell currently leads the AICD's strategic communications and media relations, government relations and policy advocacy.

He was a former business journalist, columnist and editor of more than 23 years with experience as an economics editor and deputy editor of The Australian Financial Review and business editor of The Sydney Morning Herald.

During his time in the media, Burrell won both a Walkley award and Pan Asian Journalist of the Year award.

He was also a policy adviser in the Federal Treasury and trained as an economist at the University of Sydney and the Australian National University.

Coroneos said, "I leave knowing the momentum will continue as our issues envelop the mainstream."

He retires effectively from June 30 and Burrell is to take up the post in September.
