UPDATED: Henderson steps out of retirement to head up Westcon Group

It's an opportunity “too good to ignore"

David Henderson has stepped out of retirement to head up Westcon Group, following Leigh Howard’s departure in April.

Henderson had announced his retirement in November of 2010 from full time work as the general manager of partners and alliances at EMC.

He had not been looking for a new role, but this was an opportunity “too good to ignore”, he said.

“Life just presents opportunities such as these, and you can’t walk away from them,” Henderson said. “This is a volatile environment, and interesting time in distribution, which is why it’s attractive to me.”

The nature of the world economic situation means the market needs to be approached with conservative optimism, he said, but the opportunities are significant for distribution companies in times such as these.

Vendors that undergo downsizing in the local environment will lean more heavily on their distributor partners to approach the market. On the other end of the scale, resellers will need help with credit crunches if they hit.

“As a distributor, you have to make sure your value proposition is leveraged properly by your partners,” Henderson said. “I have no plans to change how Westcon operates in the market – why would I? If you’ve got a model that’s working, you take it and exploit it to the highest degree.”

Westcon Group executive vice president, Wendy O’Keeffe, said the Group has growth targets of greater than single digit for the near term, and sees a great deal of opportunity in the market.

Henderson’s appointment was part of a long history Westcon has enjoyed with his previous employer, EMC.

“He and I worked together in setting up the EMC relationship,” O’Keeffe said. “It was a very close relationship.

“We had asked David to do some consultation work with us following his retirement, and after working with the teams, he said to me ‘I’d like to put my hand up for the role.’”

Henderson has also held roles with Tech Pacific, 3 Com, AST Computer Systems, Toshiba and 3M.

He starts at Westcon on August 8.
