APP OF THE DAY: Bloomberg Businessweek

APP OF THE DAY: Bloomberg Businessweek

"Photos can’t been expanded for a full screen or slideshow view like they can in Time"

Bloomberg Businessweek
Cost: Free ($3/month subscription) | Developer: Bloomberg Finance | Platform: iPad | Version 1.1.1 | 3.6 MB | iOS 4.2+

The first thing to note about this app is that it’s the cheapest way to subscribe to Bloomberg Businessweek; one of the better finance, markets and business magazines out there. $36/year for this weekly magazine is a bargin. If you have a print subscription, then the iPad download is also free of charge.

There’s no way to buy single issues of the magazine (or if there is, it’s buried behind layers of prompts to get people to subscribe, I certainly didn’t see it), but there is a free issue for people to try before they buy.

The app itself is great quality and laid out very cleanly; there’s a row of coloured tabs across the top of the screen for navigation, and icons for emailing articles, printing from the app itself and bookmarking for later reference are all within easy reach.

There’s also an effort to include video footage, and plenty of images. Honestly, this needs some work, for instance, photos can’t been expanded for a full screen or slideshow view like they can be in Time. In the coming months or years expect Bloomberg to do a better job with this, because the text itself is very nicely optimised.

Otherwise, like with any other media app, it’s all about the content, and Bloomberg’s content is of a very high quality. Anyone with an interest in business will probably want this app sitting next to The Economist on their iPads.

Pros: It’s an inexpensive way to access the Bloomberg Businessweek magazine, and the layout is great.

Cons: It would be good to see more utilisation of video and a less traditional approach to photos. This is a touch too traditional when compared to what other media organisations are doing with their iPad apps.

Verdict: This is a premier business magazine, and a very useful resource to have on the iPad.
