Xirrus looks to make strides in A/NZ

New product provides the new vendor in a mature market with a unique offering, it claims

Wireless networking vendor, Xirrus, has announced a new product that it claims will provide its channel substantial advantages over the competition.

The Xirrus XR-6000 series’ main selling point is that it’s an upgradeable platform. Where the typical wireless access points need to be rip-and-replaced every two years, the Xirrus platform’s internal radios can be detached from the unit and replaced individually, much like the way blade servers work, according to the vendor’s area vice-president, Asia-Pacific and Japan, Allan Smith.

Other benefits include expandability – units can easily increase capacity from eight radios to 16, and antennas that have been engineers to beam the radio signal in specific directions, which helps to increase the strength of the signal.

As a 100 per cent channel organisation, Xirrus is hoping that despite being last to the party amongst wireless technology vendors, it can win market share from incumbents such as Cisco, Ruckus and Aruba.

With that in mind, its goal is to outpace market growth. So far it’s doing that.

Smith said the wireless market was currently growing at a rate of between 52 and 54 per cent. For Q2, Xirrus experienced growth of 58.3 per cent.

The vendor is solely represented in Australia by Distribution Central.

“I couldn’t find a reason to have more than one distributor,” Smith said. “We want to protect the market.”

Xirrus features deal registration as part of its partner program, and is currently involved in partner conferences in Sydney and Melbourne as it unveils the new product and educates partners on how to install it.

The vendor’s Australia and New Zealand country manager, Joe Acuri, said the main market opportunities were in spaces where large groups of people might temporarily converge.

“We’re seeing good traction in education, events, health care and shipping ports,” Acuri said.

“In the US, the US Marines use our products because it’s possible to deploy wireless networks in under three minutes.”
