According to analyst firm, Gartner, worldwide PC shipments for Q3, 2011, rose 3.2 per cent from the same period in 2010. That’s lower than Gartner’s previous projection of 5.1 per cent, but there were some winners.
Chief among them is Lenovo, which jumped to second place, behind HP and ahead of Dell, with growth of 25.2 per cent and a market share of 13.5 per cent. Gartner attributes much of this success to the vendor’s merger with NEC for the Japanese market.
HP (5.3 per cent) and Asus (18.5 per cent) also outpaced the overall market growth. Dell (-1.4 per cent) and especially Acer (-23.2 per cent) are the ones that struggled.
In a release, Garner principal analyst, Mikako Kitagawa, said “The inventory buildup, which slowed growth the last four quarters, mostly cleared out during the third quarter of this year; however, the PC industry has been performing below normal seasonality.
“As the PC market faced a slowdown, vendor consolidation has become a more apparent trend in the industry.”
Specifically looking at the Asia Pacific market, PC shipments grew six per cent to 31.8 million. Gartner attributes this to aggress pricing and promotions on the part of the vendors.
Also of note, specifically in the US market, Apple has become the third ranked vendor in terms of units. Its Q3 growth was 21.5 per cent.
