APP OF THE DAY: Noteshelf

A comprehensive note taking solution with superb handwriting recognition

Cost: $5.49 | | Platform:iOS | Version 5.0 | 37.5MB

To be honest, the idea of paying $5.49 for a notepad application sounds like an utter waste of money. There’s free notepad apps out there in the App Store that do the same basic thing.

But you get what you pay for. Noteshelf is a comprehensive, high quality application that has replaced the need for paper for this journalist.

There’s a massive number of different paper types available, from basic lined paper to grid paper and story-board style paper, complete with space for pictures or drawings. More can be bought from an in-app shop, and just about everyone that writes will get value out of this application.

The software does a good job of smoothing ugly scrawl into legible handwriting, and so using a finger is enough for Noteshelf to ‘work,’ though the experience gets even better with an iPad-compatible stylus.

Then, when you’ve finished work, the software arranges your notebooks into neat little shelves with a presentation much like iBook or Newstand, making referring back to them later a snap. Naturally there’s a full range of sharing options, from converting to pdf to email, to printing off the iPad.

So in short, this is what I take into meetings now rather than the old pen-and-paper.

Pros: This is a comprehensive note taking solution with superb handwriting recognition

Cons: It’s expensive, given it is just a virtual notebook

Verdict: For anyone that finds themselves taking a lot of notes, this is essential.
