Telstra has secured a $474 million deal to build and manage a unified communications network for the Department of Human Services over five years.
The Department’s tailor-made networks will be replaced with a “new backbone collaborative network” which can support IP telephony, IP call centres and video conferencing services for around 40,000 users. All of this will be consolidated to a single integrated communications platform managed by Telstra.
This deal is said to boost the telco’s growth in the network applications and services business.
“The new network will leverage the continuous advances in Telstra’s Next IP network, providing the advanced security, reliability, and low latency needed by the Department and its master programs delivering cost efficiencies and cost benefits,” Telstra enterprise and government group managing director, Paul Geason, said in a statement.
Cost savings is also a motivation for the Department to adopt the new communications network along with productivity benefits.
“The contract provides better services and greater access for some of our most disadvantaged citizens, as well as providing a boost for the Australian industry,” Minister for Human Services, Senator Kim Carr, said in a statement.
