Amazon Kindle Fire 2 release will rival Nexus 7 with better screen

Amazon Kindle Fire 2 will launch this quarter, thinner and lighter

Amazon will supposedly launch its Kindle Fire 2 tablet in this quarter to rival the Google Nexus 7 tablet.

The firm will follow up the original Android tablet with the Kindle Fire 2, launching late in the third quarter. It will have an improved display with a higher resolution of 1280 x 800. See also: Amazon Kindle Fire 2 to rival Google Nexus 7.

"The really interesting thing here is that the screen shape is changing slightly: From an aspect ratio of 1.71 (tall and narrow in its standard Portrait mode) to an aspect ratio of 1.60," DisplayMate president Raymond Soneira told AllThingsD.

The Kindle Fire 2 will also reportedly have a thinner and lighter design compared to the original as well as including a camera. Soneira confirmed the Kindle Fire 2 will have a pixel density of 216ppi, the same as the Nexus 7 so it too will have a 7in screen.

Last week we discovered that Amazon has placed an order for two million Kindle Fire 2 tablets with a Taiwanese manufacturer with a release date of 7 August. Amazon is also planning to launch its own smartphone.

Adding to the possible battle between Amazon and Google with their 7in tablets is a rumoured iPad Mini from Apple. The device will reportedly launch in October.
