Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 arrives in Australia

Claimed to be lightest Windows 8 slate in the country

PC manufacturer, Lenovo, has launched its ThinkPad Tablet 2 in Australia through distributors Ingram Micro and Synnex, following the product’s US release in late December.

Lenovo claims the device, which is designed for business users, is the “world’s lightest Windows 8 tablet to hit Aussie shores,” with a starting weight of 565 grams for the 32GB touch-only version. According to its website, the 64GB Wi-Fi only model weighs 570 grams, and is bumped to 590 grams with the digitiser pen, and further to 610 grams for the 3G with NFC and digitiser device.

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 is powered by an Intel Atom Z2760 dual-core 1.80GHz processor. It has a 10.1-inch IPS LED-backlit display, and Intel Integrated HD SGX545 GFx graphics. 2GB of DDR2 SDRAM is built in.

Lenovo quotes the battery life as 10 hours for video streaming, 30 days for connected standby, and 150 hours for MP3 playback (LCD off, HW off-loading).

Ports include (one of each) USB 2.0, mini HDMI, microSD slot, docking connector, and 3.5mm microphone/headphone jack.

The ThinkPad Tablet 2 has an eight-megapixel rear-facing camera with LED flash, as well as a front-racing 2-megapixel camera.

"With built-in security and manageability capabilities, the ThinkPad Tablet 2 is the perfect choice for those who require enterprise application and compatibility similar to that of a PC, with the portability and lightness that we've come to expect from tablets," Lenovo Australia and New Zealand (A/NZ) product business manager, Lindsay Tobin, said.

In a press statement, Lenovo lists the starting price as $749 including GST. According to Lenovo, this applies to a 32GB touch-only model which is currently only available through the channel, but will be online next week.

The vendor’s website lists models which are valued from $955.90 (with a web price of $819) for the 64GB Wi-Fi model, $1076.90 ($919 web) for the 64GB 3G variant, and $1126.90 ($949) for the 64GB 3G with NFC option.
