UPDATED EXCLUSIVE: Altech website subject to pornography hack

Distributor yet to uncover a culprit

The website of Australian-owned distributor, Altech Computers, experienced a security breach on January 20, when its website was hacked by a currently unknown source.

The hacker replaced the content of the home page with three images of cartoon pornography.

Altech is currently investigating the issue and told ARN that it would release an official statement once the cause of the breach was uncovered and confirmed.

The hack was reported to ARN by Altech customer and infrastructure solutions provider, Identity Computing.

Identity’s Kurt Mirrow discovered it at about 1:00am on Sunday when trying to log in.

"I went to the Altech home page to log on so I could get pricing for a project I'm working on at the moment, and stopped a little short," Mirrow said.

Mirrow produced screenshot evidence of the pornography which ARN has in possession.

Mirrow also said that the website went down about an hour later. Once live again, its appropriate content was restored.

Update (12:26pm): Altech has released the following statement further confirming the attack and ensuring customers that no information has been compromised:

"The hacker gained access to Altech's 'Product News' page and uploaded pornographic content onto the page. The overall effect was pretty minimal, however the decision to temporarily shut down the site was taken until a full audit could be completed."

"Altech has fully investigated the attack and determined that at no time was any Altech customers' information compromised and is pleased to report that everything is back to normal, with extra layers of security added to avoid future attacks."

"Altech will continue to further investigate this matter."
