MobileMuster sponsors national recycling initiative

Supports third instalment of Garage Sale Trail which will take place on October 26

Not-for-profit mobile recycling company, MobileMuster, is partnering with the third annual Garage Sale Trail to encourage Australians to find a new home for unused mobile devices, or recycle them.

Garage Sale Trail is an initiative which organises communities around Australia to hold garage sales on the same day. This year’s instalment is scheduled for Sunday, October 26, and is supported by marketplace partner eBay, financial partner ANZ Bank, and NSW sponsors EPA and MobileMuster.

In sponsoring the event, MobileMuster aims to bring attention to the 23 million unused mobile phones in homes and businesses around Australia.

“When you recycle your old mobile phones and accessories, you will be keeping them out of landfill as well as reducing the need to mine all the resources that go into making them” MobileMuster recycling manager, Rose Read, said.

Garage Sale Trail co-founder, Darryl Nichols, expects this year’s drive to double last year’s 624,432 redistributed items.

“If you sell a mobile phone at Garage Sale Trail, you’ll not only be finding a new life for it, but you could make some good money on a phone that’s in workable order and not too old.”

“The message about Australian households needing to think of creative solutions to reduce waste is loud and clear.”

Households, community groups, schools, local businesses, cultural institutions and charities can register their interest via the Garage Sale Trail Web site in order to commence the planning of their sale. The first 5000 registrants nationally (or by October 6) will be mailed a free participant pack with posters to promote their sale.

Since the first Garage Sale Trail in 2010, the initiative has redistributed about one million items from going to landfill, generated more than $1 million in local economic activity, and facilitated $3m in fundraising.
