Samsung Unpacked 2014 tipped for February 23: Galaxy S5 launch date and price revealed

Will Samsung launch the Galaxy S5 at MWC?

Samsung is supposedly going to launch its Galaxy S5 smartphone on February 23 in Barcelona.

News surrounding the Galaxy S5 smartphone is hitting new heights as a launch date has been suggested by Mobile Review's Eldar Murtazin. He states that Samsung will introduce the Galaxy S5 at 18:00 on 23 February in Barcelona. See also: New Samsung Galaxy S5 UK release date, rumours, new features and leaked images.

This suggests a Samsung Unpacked 2014 event a day before Mobile World Congress (MWC) kicks off where most of this year's smartphones and tablets will be on show.

Murtazin says that the Galaxy S5 will get a release date in April and will hit shops at the same price as its predecessor, £630. It will also launch with a new version of TouchWiz user interface with a different name, which ties in with the homescreen which has been leaked. Samsung typically launches its flagship Galaxy S devices at dedicated events so to launch it effectively at MWC would make for a change. Other rumours have hinted a return to London for the Galaxy S5 so perhaps the 23 February Unpacked 2014 event will be for rumoured devices including the Galaxy Note Neo and Galaxy Note 3 Lite.

We'll have to wait and see. The Galaxy S5 is tipped to come with a 2K QHD screen, 20Mp camera and an iris sensor. It's heavily debated whether it will come with a plastic or metal design.

A rival to the Galaxy S5 will also be arriving in June, according to Murtazin, who says that the next-generation iPhone will possibly hit the market. Meaning a much shorter cycle for Apple after the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c launched in September last year.
