McAfee offers free Mobile Security app

Also releases troubling mobile security figures

McAfee has released a free version of its mobile security app.

The Intel company launched the app at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona as part of an Intel initiative to make security a more integral part of the consumer experience.

The free version of McAfee's Mobile Security app for Android includes enhanced protection features and unlocks security extensions for Intel-based mobile devices. McAfee said this made it the most comprehensive free mobile solution on the market.

This is the one of the first releases following Intel chief executive officer, Brian Krzanich’s announcement that the company plans to release future McAfee products as part of the new Intel Security brand.

McAfee also released its mobile security report that revealed 82 per cent of mobile apps track users. It also said that 35 per cent of the most privacy threatening apps contain malware. The most disturbing statistic was that 36 per cent of these privacy threatening apps know the users account information.

McAfee Global chief technology officer for security connected, Michael Sentonas, said consumers need to be aware of the greater risks that come with greater mobile online convenience.

"The announcement of the free version of McAfee Mobile Security today highlights McAfee's continued commitment to keeping consumers safe, and is an important step forward in Intel's long term plan to integrate security into the consumer experience. With free access to mobile security, Australians can embrace mobile technology without the fear of threats to their privacy or security."

The free McAfee Mobile Security app is available from the iOS App store and Google Play.
