Fujitsu puts a focus on unified storage with ETERNUS S3 storage devices

Fujitsu has launched the latest models in its ETERNUS storage product range.

The ETERNUS S3 series of products covers the SMB market, as well as the low-end, mid-tier market, and aims to satisfy the storage needs for businesses that have as few as 20 employees, right up to enterprises that have needs for more substantial storage requirements.

The new storage models include the DX100 S3 and DX200 S3, which are targeting the SMB and mid-tier markets, while the DX500 S3 and DX600 S3 are designed to provide bigger arrays for enterprise customers. In addition, Fujitsu Products Group marketing manager, Paul Hendry, said the company is keeping its DX60 S2 model in order to "provide a lowest cost entry point", though it will be replaced at some time in the future. Likewise, the company is keeping around its DX8700 S2 for the moment, which is the solution aimed at customers who are building "massively scalable" Cloud projects.

New Intel Xeon processors are used throughout the S3 range, and while the new storage puts an emphasis on much improved overall performance, there is also a larger focus on new features, reliability and support, and scalability, especially at the enterprise level. The DX600 S3 is capable of offering a maximum capacity of 4224TB through 1056, 3.5in hard drives, while the SMB-focused DX100 S3 offers maximum capacity of 576TB.

Fujitsu channel manager for Australia and New Zealand, Daniel Campbell, said that the new storage devices put the company ahead of its competition due to the inclusion of features such as unified storage, Automatic Quality-of-Service, in-depth reporting, and Extreme Cache.

Unified storage is the main new feature that Fujitsu is pushing. It allows block (SAN) and file (NAS) access to run from the same storage controller in the unit, with support for all current protocols.

Automatic Quality-of-Service Management is a feature in the new storage devices that allows customers to set their specific response times for serving data. The storage device ensures that that the specified time is met for serving particular data, and it's a feature that allows mission-critical operations to share the same storage as less demanding applications.

In-depth reporting is possible with the new storage devices, allowing customers to examine usage patterns and recognise which of their users or departments are using specific resources, and how much of the resources they are consuming. It's a feature that can help organisations charge specific usage to different departments or tailor resources to departments that need them the most.

Meanwhile, for enterprise customers with immensely demanding loads, the DX500 and DX600 storage devices can be configured with an Extreme Cache, which uses solid state drives that plug directly into the server's PCIe controller to provide "massive IOPS performance".

Fujitsu's Daniel Campbell reiterated the company's dedication to research and development, with the new storage being built from the ground up, in-house by Fujitsu engineers. Campbell also said there are currently over 1000 installations of ETERNUS arrays already in Australia, with a diverse customer base ranging from supermarkets to data centres.

He said Fujitsu has seen significant year-on-year growth in the last financial year, with a network that now comprises around 380 resellers.

The launch was held at Bar 100's the Chapel room in Sydney.
