Melbourne-based carrier Vixtel is leveraging crowdfunding website Indiegogo to launch an innovative tablet which also operates as a PC and a phone.

The Unity, designed in Australia is a 10.1-inch widescreen tablet that once docked allows users to connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse and operate the tablet as a PC using a Linux based operating system, Ubuntu.

Out of the dock, the Unity operates and feels like a tablet and runs on Android KitKat.

Vixtel has also incorporated a full suite of PBX software and a Bluetooth handset, essentially turning the tablet into three devices – a tablet, a PC and phone system.

Vixtel chief executive, Terry Crews, said his clients had been crying out for one device to perform all their computing and communications function.

"Through the development of simultaneous operating systems, we’ve succeeded in delivering this where the bigger hardware developers have failed.”

The Unity is scheduled to launch in.

Crews said the tablet had received strong strong support from the online community that were extremely disappointed when Canonical discontinued their Ubuntu for Android project.

"We want to offer these people a chance to get their hands on a device prior to launch," he said.
