Canberra Data Centres signs Digital Realty Trust expansion deal

It will use Digital Realty Trust datacentres in Sydney and Melbourne for government contracts

Canberra Data Centres has signed an agreement to use Digital Realty Trust datacentres in Sydney and Melbourne to fulfil its government panel supply contracts.

The partnership enable the ACT based data centre provider to use Digital Realty’s Tier III certified Sydney and Melbourne data centres for its government panel supply contracts.

Canberra Data Centres owns and operates four data centres out of Canberra and was recently appointed to the Department of Finance, Data Centre Supplies Panel (Panel 2) as an approved supplier to Australian government agencies.

The panel will provide federal and state agencies with a selection of qualified suppliers and facilities, into which they can consolidate the government’s $850m per year expenditure on data centres.

Digital Realty currently has four data centres in Australia - two in Sydney and two in Melbourne. The most recent facility to open was Digital Deer Park in Melbourne, in November 2013, which forms part of Digital Realty’s $150 million investment in Victoria.

Canberra Data Centres chief executive, Greg Boorer, said Digital Realty had provided the company with the footprint and flexibility to expand its offering into the key markets of Sydney and Melbourne.

"We feel that the combination of our expertise and track record in supporting government agencies combined with Digital Realty’s global reputation will be a compelling story for both existing and new customers,” said Greg Boorer, Chief Executive Officer, Canberra Data Centres.

Digital Realty managing director, Bernard Geoghegan, said a datacentre was as much a source of strategic advantage for government as it was for commercial enterprises.

“We look forward to working with Canberra Data Centres, an industry leader in providing high quality data centre facilities to government in the ACT, so they can address a much broader range of requirements in support of the federal government’s data centre strategy.”
