Telstra and Motorola Solutions team for public safety

Former’s LANES capabilities to be boosted by latter’s public safety products

The capabilities of Telstra’s LTE Advanced Network for Emergency Services (LANES) will be extended through the addition of Motorola Solutions’ dynamic prioritisation, smart public safety applications, interoperability solutions, and public safety-optimised devices.

The companies’ products will be integrated as part of a new memorandum of understanding intended to provide dedicated, priority broadband data access to emergency services during large-scale incidents. The goal is to ensure critical information can be shared in real-time.

The Enhanced LANES product uses dedicated spectrum resources augmented with prioritisation on Telstra’s existing spectrum holdings to deliver services.

Motorola Solutions Asia-Pacific (APAC) and Middle East senior vice-president, Mohammad Akhtar, claims the agreement provides a significant opportunity for public safety industry.

“Agencies are already contemplating how to convert the masses of available data into usable intelligence,” he said. “Our relationship with Telstra is intent on putting intelligence in the hands of the people who need it most.”

Telstra networks managing director, Mike Wright, said several successful trials of the enhanced LANES have been completed, demonstrating the possibility of providing dedicated services to numerous users while managing telecommunications requirements of the general public.

The first real-world trial will be conducted during the G20 Summit in Brisbane in November, during which Telstra will work with the Queensland State Government to showcase LANES capabilities.

This memorandum of understanding builds on a previous contract between Telstra and Motorola Solutions through which the two were selected to design, build, operate and maintain a Queensland Government Wireless Network (GWN) in a deal worth $457.3 million covering a 15-year period.
