Apple on Dec. 11 will welcome to its stores around the world those wanting to take part in the Code.org Hour of Code programming initiative.

If you're interested in taking part in an Apple Store workshop, act fast since slots are filling up already. Apple will be hosting engineers and developers to teach students at select stores around the world.

The Hour of Code is the main event during the Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 8-14) that non-profit Code.org is spearheading to inspire K-12 students to take an interest in computer science. Code.org has sought to make the tutorials in its arsenal as engaging as possible for kids. For example, it has partnered with Disney Interactive to create a tutorial featuring characters from the movie "Frozen."

Code.org has been running what's turned out to be the most successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign of all time in its effort to deliver code lessons to 100 million students worldwide. More than $4 million has been raised, with the likes of Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg pledging huge contributions and companies like Google and Microsoft matching donations. Much of the money will be used to school more than 10,000 teachers to instruct the students.

Look for various vendors to promote their own Hour of Code efforts over the next week. Microsoft, for example, has a page called YouthSpark that supports the Hour of Code.
