Compaq has committed to enterprise computing with the announcement of its OpenVMS Galaxy software architecture which includes support for Microsoft's COM model.
The vendor has announced almost 20 new and enhanced products and services to provide a greater level of integration between OpenVMS and Windows NT. OpenVMS is a 64-bit computing environment to support business-critical data centre requirements on NT.
Compaq's OpenVMS Galaxy is a continuation of the OpenVMS operating system which delivers scalability and highly available computing with flexible operating features in a single computer, company officials said. It enables multiple instances of OpenVMS to execute in a single computer, giving users the ability to manage unpredictable, variable or growing workloads, Compaq officials said.
Affinity for OpenVMS is a continuing program for Compaq which integrates OpenVMS and NT in an enterprise environment.
COM for OpenVMS is a new implementation of the Microsoft COM object technology on OpenVMS for secure distributed application development. It integrates NT and OpenVMS by increasing application portability, making software maintenance less expensive and provides for rapid prototyping of new applications, officials said.
Steve Kendrick, marketing manager, high performance servers, said: "Compaq has product plans in place well past the year 2000 that will see OpenVMS continue to deliver new functionality and high availability.
"The OpenVMS Galaxy software architecture will continue to be enhanced to give seamless integration with Windows NT through future support for Windows NT V5.0," he said.
