NBN launches satellite service for enterprise applications

NBN Co has officially launched its Access Bandwidth Service (ABS). The service, designed for enterprise customers, offers wholesale committed information rates (CIR) of up to 50/13Mbps and unlimited data.

Bandwidth can be ordered in 1Mbps increments. An ‘ABS Burst’ feature allows a service to support bursting up to 10, 20 or 50Mbps when needed.

A ‘Time of Day’ feature supports two speed profiles per 24 hours, allowing a business to switch to higher download or upload speeds at regular periods of peak demand.

According to NBN Co, a service can be configured so that it is only active when necessary, enabling its use for disaster recovery scenarios or other use cases where an always-on connection is not needed.

“This is another great milestone for NBN Co supporting Australian businesses in hard to reach regions across the nation who require access to high bandwidth speeds to support their digital requirements,” said Gavin Williams, NBN Co’s chief development officer of regional development engagement, in a statement provided by the company.

“After the successful launch of products and services for medium and large businesses over the business NBN Satellite Service in September, the team have finalised the new Access Bandwidth Service wholesale offering,” Williams said.

“The product takes connectivity up a notch for enterprise and government customers with critical applications required for their operations in rural and regional areas.

“Our commitment and focus on businesses within rural and remote regions will continue, to deliver significant benefits through greater access to lift the digital capability of Australia.”

NBN Co also offers designed for the business market.

Its IoT service supports bandwidth starting from 10/10Kbps per service, with CIR of up to 2/2Mbps. The VISP service, which is designed for businesses that need high speeds and large download quotas, allows telcos to pool the data quotas of a business spread across multiple premises.

NBN Co in 2018 began offering Layer 3 satellite services; at launch its Sky Muster service was delivered as a Layer 2 Ethernet bitstream service.
