Akanda, Aptira and Cumulus Networks announce OpenStack partnership

Aptira to bring Akanda’s open source network platform to datacentres globally

Major contributor of launched OpenStack Project Astara, Akanda, has collaborated with Aptira and Cumulus Networks to assist OpenStack customers in deploying the supported open source networking stack designed for enterprises, service providers and Cloud platforms.

Together, the companies aim to provide networking solutions that provide better consistency, performance and flexibility for OpenStack Clouds.

Akanda said, in a statement, that it looks to transform the network virtualisation industry by delivering Astara, the open source, vendor agnostic network orchestration platform that aims to address OpenStack Neutron implementations.

According to Akanda, the platform simplifies the daily operations common to OpenStack operators by providing a lifecycle management and orchestration platform to configure and manage network services including routing and load balancing, in multi-tenant OpenStack environments.

“By delivering an open, extensible, and fully-integrated solution, Astara’s open source platform helps OpenStack cloud operators decrease networking costs, increase operational flexibility and free themselves from restrictive and expensive proprietary networking systems,” said Akanda co-founder and chief technology officer, Mark McClain.

Akanda and Cloud computing company, Cumulus Networks, have expanded the partnership in aiming to advance networking for OpenStack Cloud operators.

The companies look to provide tighter integration and support for its Dynamics Lightweight Network Virtualization (DLNV), a lightweight network overlay solution for Cloud services on bare metal switches.

According to the companies, the Astara platform orchestrates the Linux Bridge driver and multi-tenant Layer 3 through 7 functionality to the Cumulus Networks hardware-accelerated underlay. Cumulus Networks said by integrating the two platforms, operations can get a complete OpenStack-ready networking stack.

“Our joint solution with Akanda represents a new way to meet the performance and networking needs of OpenStack users,” said Cumulus Networks founder and chief technology officer, Nolan Leake.

“As our customers consider their choices for OpenStack deployments, this partnership enables the delivery of best-in-class network virtualisation with dramatically reduced costs,” he said.

Aptira chief executive, Tristan Goode, said the partnership combines a solution for network virtualisation with Aptira’s exacting delivery in Asia-Pacific and around the world.

“We’re delighted to combine forces to bring our many enterprise and service provider customers the disruptive OpenStack NFV solutions of tomorrow, today,” he added.
