World's first 4K smartphone, Sony Xperia Z5 Premium, goes on sale in Australia

Undercuts Apple iPhone 6s Plus on price

The first smartphone in the world to have a 4K display, Sony’s Xperia Z5 Premium, is now on sale in Australia.

Retailer JB Hi-Fi appears to be the only retail outlet selling the Chrome colour of the smartphone. All colours are on sale at Sony’s dedicated kiosks.

Pricing for the Xperia Z5 Premium, which PCWorld reviewed yesterday, has been set at $1199. Company representatives confirmed the model sold is unlocked and running software free from carrier branding.

The smartphone follows the Xperia Z5 and Z5 Compact, which were released last month with the backing of carriers Vodafone, Optus and Telstra.

The Z5 Premium is the first smartphone in the world to have a 4K screen. Its 801 pixel-per-inch density is almost double that of Apple’s iPhone 6s Plus.

Sony introduced its next generation camera in its Z5 range. Photos are taken at 23MP and videos are recorded in 4K resolution.

Powering the smartphone is a Snapdragon 810 chipset with two quad-core CPUs. It has 3GB of RAM, 32GB of storage and a microSD slot compatible with cards up to 2TB in size.

Displays demand the most from a smartphone’s battery. Sony has integrated a 3430mAh battery into the Z5 Premium to compensate.
