NEC Australia has landed a contract with federal government agency, CrimTrac to provide multi-modal biometric identification.
The deal will see NEC deliver Biometric Identification Services (BIS) in 2017, management and support services for the next five years.
NEC’s facial recognition technology will be used for the purposes of identification, linking and solving crimes, and rapid identification using mobile capture devices.
The new platform replaces CrimTrac’s National Automated Fingerprint Identification System and will enhance already captured biometric data such as existing police databases, which contain up to 12 million facial images and 6.7 million print sets.
It will also enhance CrimTrac’s traditional biometric modes for identification including fingerprint, palm print and foot print data, and will be the foundation to integrate future biometric modes.NEC’s fingerprint and facial recognition technologies are used by more than 1000 customers in more than 40 countries worldwide and has scored the top ranking for accuracy and speed in three consecutive facial recognition annual benchmark tests conducted by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).
