Last week reports surfaced of a coming partnership between VMware and Amazon Web Services. Both companies declined to comment on the rumors, but earlier this week Amazon Web Services called a press conference for Thursday afternoon.
Hours before the press conference in San Francisco with AWS CEO Andy Jassy a blog post from VMware leaked onto the Internet announcing the deal between the two companies. Tech Crunch was the first to report it.
A cached version of the blog post announces VMware Cloud on AWS. “(It) will bring VMware’s enterprise class Software-Defined Data Center software to the AWS cloud, and will enable customers to run any application across vSphere-based private, public and hybrid cloud environments.”
The offering includes vSphere, VSAN and NSX running on what VMware calls AWS infrastructure that has been “purpose-built” for this offering. Invite-only betas will begin in 2017 with broader availability expected in mid-2017.
