Queensland-based Venn IT Solutions has supported CoreLogic’s data-driven business transformation by helping to overhaul its legacy tape back-up and moving its digital business model into the cloud.
Major property and data analytics provider, Corelogic, required a transformation to manage 600 data sources and a petabyte of data produced by its 11,000 customers and 120,000 end users, with the vast and daily data influx threatening its 40-year-old data.
“Data is our lifeblood," CoreLogic Head of ICT, Adrian Jansz, said. "Without our data – and strategies to protect it – we fundamentally have no business and are unable to provide the accurate insights our customers expect.
"Since the property boom, our data has grown exponentially every year. As a result, we knew we had to come up with effective ways to backup data and re-use it – something that had become both critical and difficult.”
Through an engagement with Commvault partner, Venn IT Solutions - a budding two-year old IT services business - the CoreLogic disaster strategy has been provided as-a-service on Commvault’s data platform.
The vendor said the implementation will release resources into higher-value areas of its customer’s business and accelerate the shift from traditional tape backups to more agile processes.
Venn IT Solutions Managing Director, Geoff Hughes, explained that his business is sponsored by the vendor to run “cloud readiness assessments” around financial and other commercial benefits in a move to support the removal of tape technologies and push backup to the cloud.
Upon providing CoreLogic with the report however, commercial benefits wasn’t initially a core priority for them. Rather, it was a reliability decision.
“One of the benefits that….they aren’t yet aware of is how much time people were involved with the tape rotation processes and the on-going maintenance of the physical infrastructure of tape,” Hughes explained.
“They grossly underestimated how much time and distraction it was for tapes. That was a big benefit that they had.”
“A key part of this process is that the CoreLogic guys have now made a decision around the entire operation of their backup environment and re-deploying their IT asset to a more meaningful process.
"As a result, Venn IT is actually operating and managing their backup environment as a managed service now.”
Hughes said the actual implementation time to change from being a tape-based backup solution to being a cloud-based backup solution was about three days.
Jansz said not just its servers and platforms, but also its desktops and laptops are being backed-up to cloud.
“Our backup engineers are highly skilled, as a result we were fortunate to leverage and re-skill them to gained greater velocity through product releases and improved IT security.
"Our backup strategy is critical to our business, as it allows us to focus on other areas that provide more value for customers.”
