Telstra broadband installation charges slashed

Responding to increasing levels of competition in the broadband space, Telstra has slashed $100 off the installation cost of its entire selection of broadband services.

Available during March only, new subscribers signing up for any of Telstra’s BigPond broadband services on an 18-month contract will get $100 off their installation charges. The $100 will be credited to the customer’s next bill.

This means that people who buy a Telstra Self Install ADSL kit with a 1-port modem will pay $29 to set-up the service themselves instead of the usual $129, while 4-port modem kits will be reduced to $129.

Cable set-up costs will drop from $189 to $89 for a professional installation. The $100 off will also apply to all professional ADSL installation services.

The deal also applies to one-way satellite installation services, reducing the $108.90 installation fee to just $8.90. However, users will still be required to pay for satellite equipment which can vary from $218.90 to $589.90 for a small residential dish, depending on the users’ location.

Those currently on Telstra’s one-way satellite service will also receive $100 off their installation costs if they choose to swap to a two-way satellite service, but will incur related hardware charges.

Telstra BigPond spokesperson, Kerrina Lawrence, said the decision to cut prices was in line with the telco’s aim to sign up one million broadband customers by 2005.

With around 140 ISPs now offering broadband services, Lawrence said that there was no doubt that it was a "competitive environment out there.”

“We need to make it [our service] competitive to what’s out there,” she said.
