Former SMS Management & Technology executive, Craig Lennard, has been appointed as the new CEO for consulting and technology firm, Oakton, replacing Neil Wilson, who left the organisation in February after 17 years.

Wilson departed after managing a two year transition period since the company was acquired by Dimension Data in August 2014 for $171 million. Wilson kicked off his Oakton career in 2000 as an executive director, before taking on the CEO and managing director roles in 2005.

Dimension Data CEO, Steve Nola, said Lennard will help build and expand Oakton’s capabilities.

“Craig’s expertise in business development and consulting means he is the right person to drive the next stage of Oakton’s development and that of our clients,” Nola said in a statement. “Oakton has proven business insights and expertise, very strong consulting skills and can develop and provide applications that are truly valuable in an organisation’s digital transformation.

“Businesses are struggling to really understand what impact a digital strategy will have and the related timeline and processes needed to implement them.”

Oakton maintains six offices across the country, including an offshore development centre in India with more than 1200 employees on its books.

Lennard previously spent about seven years at SMS Management & Technology in various roles and was recently its advisory and solutions managing director. He has also worked at Logica and Axciom, and is a part of the Australian Information Industry Association (AIIA) as NSW Council Treasurer.

Lennard's departure from SMS comes as ASG Group completes its $124 million acquisition of the IT services firm, with SMS delisted from the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on 27 September.

SMS and ASG are now being integrate into a single operating business, a process that should take three months and that will be led by recently appointed head of operations, Andrew Rose.

It is understood that a replacement for Lennard has been appointed, although the role will vary slightly from the position he held at SMS, as the company's ongoing integration with ASG edges closer to a broader restructure that will see the two organisations become a single, combined entity.
