Veeam has acquired cloud-native backup and disaster recovery provider and Amazon Web Services (AWS) partner, N2WS, in an all-cash deal worth US$42.5M (A$53.5 million).

Based in the United States, N2WS has made a name for itself providing a cloud-native backup solution specifically designed for AWS workloads.

The acquisition, which will see N2WS keep its name as a standalone Veeam subsidiary, is expected to bolster Veeam’s ability to protect AWS deployments.

The deal will see Veeam gain access to N2WS technology and research and development (R&D) to integrate data protection for AWS workloads into the Veeam Availability Platform.

Additionally, N2WS will have access to Veeam’s R&D, along with Veeam’s global ecosystem of alliances and partners, including nearly 55,000 resellers and 18,000 Veeam cloud service providers.

The arrangement will also see existing Veeam customers benefit from a soon-to-be-launched package of special offers and incentives for Cloud Protection Manager (CPM) from N2WS.

Given the heavy use of AWS in Australia and New Zealand, the move is expected to expand Veeam’s market potential in the local market, according to Veeam’s new A/NZ vice president, Gary Mitchell, who stepped into the role this month.

“The acquisition of N2WS creates a total addressable market for A/NZ, just on AWS alone of $488.75 million -- a market which wasn’t before untapped, however now allows us to access it completely,” Mitchell said.

“Customers in A/NZ are continuing to accelerate their public cloud service adoption for the appropriate services and workloads.

“Veeam now has the capabilities to truly differentiate itself in the A/NZ marketplace through offering a risk managed approach to protecting, managing, recovering and making available native based services,” he said.

For Veeam co-CEO and president, Peter McKay, the combination of Veeam’s capabilities in protecting virtual, physical and cloud environments and N2WS’ experience in AWS data protection, the company now has a strong solution to deliver on the needs of the digital enterprise.

“N2WS has experienced incredible growth in the last 12 months and it will continue to operate as a standalone business to best position the company to provide AWS data protection -- the same way Veeam transformed protection for VMware environments a decade ago. Together, we will achieve great things; this is a game-changer in every sense,” McKay said.

According to N2WS chief, Jason Judge, the company will further accelerate its growth and development of its top-rated solutions by leveraging the team that Veeam has established.

“We also look forward to assisting Veeam customers explore their public cloud strategies with our years of innovation in public cloud storage,” he said.
