Vodafone has inked a deal to offer Telstra's cloud based security platform to New Zealand corporate and government customers.

Dubbed Vodafone Security Management Services, the platform combines advanced artificial intelligence, event data and analytics supported by experts in New Zealand and Australia.

Real-time, co-ordinated security response will help protect businesses and government agencies against cyber and electronic threats, Vodafone said.

Vodafone Security Management Services will be a core offering within Vodafone’s new security practice, led by Warren Shera, head of security practice, who joined in September 2018.

Shera leads a newly-formed department of 60 staff bringing together security expertise across the business.

“Working with Telstra means that we now have a powerful intelligence and analytics platform at our fingertips," Shera said. "The platform not only quickly identifies and explores cyber threats but is also able to see true mathematical anomalies."

Nearly half (46 per cent) of Vodafone’s public sector customers surveyed indicated they suspect their business experiences cyber threats every month.

“We are exploring similar arrangements in the managed services, cloud and digital services domains,” said Michael Ebeid, group executive of enterprise at Telstra.

“Customers are already talking with us about how we can not only help them improve their operations in New Zealand but also reach global markets via our global capabilities.”

To lead its expansion into the New Zealand market, Telstra has appointed Rob Lee as managing director of New Zealand.

Lee joined Telstra in July 2018 after a 30 year career at IBM, where he held a number of senior leadership roles including managing director of IBM New Zealand.

Lee said the cloud security platform has a strong New Zealand connection through Telstra's 2016 acquisition of Christchurch-based advanced security analytics provider Cognevo.
