Cisco is to acquire UK-based networking software specialist Ensoft for an undisclosed amount.

The US networking giant currently works in partnership with the privately-held firm to develop its IOS XR operating system.

Expected to be completed by January next year, according to Cisco, the deal is aimed at simplifying its IP network through programmability and automation.

Ensoft claims to work with major US vendors on developing software for core and edge routing, carrier ethernet, broadband, mobile, and video.

“Acquiring the Ensoft team accelerates this strategy and strengthens our commitment to our service provider customers,” Cisco head of corporate development and venture investment Rob Salvagno wrote in a blog post.

“Ensoft brings a strong talent pipeline to Cisco, adding a high-performance team to augment Cisco’s ongoing innovation in networking software.”

Once the deal is complete, the firm's employees will be managed by Cisco’s Service Provider Networking Group, which is led by senior vice president and general manager Sumeet Arora.

The acquisition comes as Cisco shifts gear from its legacy hardware business to software networking, with an increased focus on automation and cloud services.
