HPE has expanded its partnership with VMware to bring its GreenLake and Synergy capabilities to VMware Cloud Foundation customers.

The GreenLake as-a-service offering runs on HPE’s composable cloud platform, Synergy, and allows partners to offer a fully managed hybrid cloud environment to customers on pay per-use basis.

It will be compatible across both on and off-premises data centres.

“Cloud has fundamentally changed customers’ expectations around IT. They seek an experience that allows them to act with agility, and dynamically compose resources based on business demands,” HPE president of hybrid IT, Phil Davis, said.

“VMware and HPE have a long history of co-innovation and today we are enabling customers to bring the cloud experience to their data centre. Our vision is built on a single platform that can span across multiple clouds and puts companies in a better position to take advantage of new business opportunities without the management complexity and cost.”

HPE vice president of global product marketing Paul Miller said the new deal provides channel and service partners with an opportunity to transition to an annuity stream, that is more predictable and profitable than an infrastructure sale.

“The HPE channel partners enjoy the same benefits from the current HPE GreenLake for partners program, and can now offer customers the benefits of the cloud experience with VMware Cloud Foundation. This provides longer relationships with customers and it’s beneficial for margin and revenue,” Miller said.

In June, HPE made its intentions clear that was shifting towards adapting an as-a-service model within the next three years.

It will continue to provide its hardware and software in a capital expenditure and license-based model, but is pushing to give consumers more choice over how they use their technology whether it is through subscription, managed IT services or pay per-use model.

At the time, HPE said it would continue to scale GreenLake service offerings targeting the mid-market sector, new services for the edge and new and expanded partnerships with companies such as CyrusOne, Equinix and Google Cloud.

The GreenLake portfolio spans a range of purpose built services from HPE and its network of partners, as well as metering and governance capabilities where businesses can monitor and adjust their usage.

According to HPE, GreenLake is the fastest growing part of its business contributing more than US$2.8 billion in total contract value with more than 600 customers, and boasts a 99 per cent renewal rate.
