Macquarie Telecom has signed an agreement with Microsoft, to deliver VMware software-defined WAN (SD WAN) by VeloCloud services through the Microsoft Azure Marketplace.

The agreement will see the VMware SD WAN delivered through Microsoft’s Azure Lighthouse, with Macquarie Telecom claiming is is the first managed service provider (MSP) to do so.

Businesses managed by Macquarie Telecom that utilise Azure public cloud environments will be able to access the benefits of an Azure-enabled SD WAN, according to a statement by the MSP.

These benefits include as visibility and control over up to 3,600 applications, the prioritisation or deprioritisation of applications for bandwidth and infrastructure optimisation, carrier neutrality and link remediation; the optimisation of networks for high speed and low latency.

Michael Davies, head of revenue at Macquarie Telecom, said SD WAN technology has already had a “hugely positive impact” on the networks of Australian networks, and created demand for the technology to be applied to the cloud as a result.

“This takes the ‘plumbing’ out of IT teams’ roles and enables them to work where they’re needed – driving innovation to stay competitive,” Davies said.

Luke Clifton, group executive at Macquarie Telecom said the agreement “represents a huge milestone and validation of our technology.”

“Combined with our industry-leading customer service and existing partnerships across the Macquarie Telecom Group, we now have an unmatched telco, cloud and network solution to resolve the challenges Australian businesses face at every touch point,” said Clifton.

Brett Shoemaker, business group leader for Azure at Microsoft Australia added that he is looking forward to the agreement and Sasha Emmerling, senior director of marketing for the VeloCloud business unit at VMware called Macquarie Telecom a “valued” partner of VMware.

Macquarie Telecom’s SD WAN solution has been implemented in nearly 4,000 sites around Australia through its corporate customers.

This is the latest in a number of agreements Macquire Telecom have signed over the last year. Previous agreements include Apple to provide mobility solutions for mid-market enterprises and NBN Co for selling telecommunication and data services to businesses in Australia .
