Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced its AWS Lake Formation service is live in Australia through the Asia Pacific (Sydney) region.

The service allows for users to set up a secure data lake in days according to AWS, with users able to create one by defining where data is located and what access and security policies a user would like.

AWS Lake Formation then collects, catalogs and moves the data from databases and object storage into an Amazon S3 data lake, where the data is cleaned and classified through machine learning algorithms and then secured.

The data can then be accessed through a centralised catalogue, revealing available data sets and how they can be used. Users are then able to process the data sets with analytic and machine learning services, such as Amazon EMR for Apache Spark, Amazon Redshift Spectrum and Amazon Athena.

As defined by AWS, data lakes are a centralised, curated and secured data repository for storing data, which is then prepared for analysis and allows users to break down data silos and combine analytics. The end result can give users more of an awareness regarding business decisions.

In addition of being available in Australia through the Sydney region, other newly added AWS Lake Formation regions include Singapore and Mumbai.
