Chip designer Transmeta to go public

Microprocessor chip designer Transmeta announced late last week that it has filed a registration statement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) for an IPO (initial public offering).

The company said it plans to use the proceeds of the IPO for "working capital and other general corporate purposes."Transmeta launched its Crusoe family of microprocessors in January. Aimed at use in notebook computers and Internet appliances, the company has already won support from IBM, Fujitsu, Hitachi and NEC. Earlier last week, as it launched its newest Crusoe laptop chip, Transmeta said that Sony would also begin using its processor.
