Samsung Galaxy Note 4, Note Edge and Gear VR on sale early November

Samsung will release its Galaxy Note 4 and Edge, the Gear S smartwatch and its Gear VR headset in Australia by November.

The company’s 5.7in Galaxy Note 4 will go on sale 29 October for $949, while the Galaxy Note Edge variant will follow on 5 November for $1249.

Samsung’s revised Note series are its first smartphones released in Australia to come with a metal chassis. Incorporating metal adds a premium touch to Samsung’s familiar design language.

Key to the Note range are large, high-resolution screens. The Note 4’s 5.7in AMOLED display has a 2560x1440 resolution and a density of 515 pixels-per-inch (ppi).

The Note Edge crams the same resolution into a 5.6in AMOLED display. Its defining feature is a screen that continues to curve well over the left hand side of the smartphone, falling right over in a fashion reminiscent of a waterfall. The curve acts as a secondary display powered by Samsung's UX software, and is used to display notifications, act as a news ticker, house secondary controls and more. It adds another 160 pixels to the smartphone’s display.

Chief of marketing at Samsung Australia, Arno Lenior, said Australia will be one of a select few countries to launch the Galaxy Note Edge on account of its high adoption of emerging technologies.

The Note series will come with Samsung’s famed S-Pen stylus, ultra power saving mode and a fast charge battery that can go from flat to 45 percent in 30 minutes.

Samsung will ship the smartphones to Australia with a 2.7GHz quad-core CPU, as opposed to the octa-core processor offered in select overseas markets. The smartphones will also have 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded with microSD cards up to 128GB in size.

The Note 4 works with a virtual reality headset accessory developed by Oculus called Gear VR. Popping the smartphone into the headset is the equivalent of standing 2 metres away from a 175-inch screen.

Gear VR will go on sale in November for $249.

Samsung will also release the Gear S smartwatch, its curved screen 3G capable smartwatch, for $449, and the Gear Circle bluetooth headset for $179 in the month of November.
